The US forces the cancellation of trips by Cuban emigration from Europe: did you hear the protests?

José Manzaneda, coordinator of Cubainformación. Translated by Laura V. Mor.- Almost a year ago, the US Government announced that it would require an entry visa for anyone who had previously visited Cuba, since this country was declared by Washington as a „sponsor of terrorism“ (1).

Citizens of the European Union who only had to fill out a simple digital form called ESTA before, having done tourism in Cuba must go through the bureaucratic round of visa applications in order to travel to the US now.

Did we read some complaint in the European press, some editorial, some angry opinion piece demanding reciprocal measures? Nothing. Silence and obedience to the imperial master as in the Ukraine issue.

The aforementioned measure affects Cubans residing abroad with dual nationality in the same way. These days, for example, those who intended to travel from Europe to the US, even with the trip and accommodation already paid for, have received an email from the US authorities, informing them that their ESTA permit has been revoked and, therefore, they must start the visa application process at a consulate (2).

What do the Cuban-themed digital media say that support Washington’s sanctions policy against Havana? Are they now defending Cuban emigration, affected by a measure that threatens their freedom to travel? Have they published interviews with people who, with helplessness and indignation, see an imminent trip cancelled? Nothing of that. There are no convictions. Only the cold explanation of the measure and the recommendations from the US Embassy (3). It´s the informative submission of some media to the Government that supports them with million-dollar subsidies (4).

At most, they tell us about the „concern“ of some affected people: „I have plans to travel to the US and I am worried“ if „there will be a setback“, we read a testimony (5). „I’m at the agency to see what I can do, because the visa appointments are for 2024… amazing!“ Was the message with the most „angry“ tone.

How do these media bring us closer to those who have found out about the matter at the same airport and have been prevented from boarding? “It was a surprise that I wanted to give my people in Miami. (…) Well, it will be another time”, explained a Cuban from the Brussels airport with bovine resignation. Where is the explosive tone against the government and the Cuban „regime“ in the statements to these media after each small incident in Cuban customs (6)?

What is better than these propaganda media to explain us the reason for all this? “A hard blow for tourism to Cuba”, we read on the Cuban Newspaper site (7). Because that is the crux of the matter. Not content with torpedoing Cuba’s investments, supplies, medical income and exports, the US government is now hitting tourism, creating discomfort and uncertainty for people who want to visit the island.

But let´s remember: these same mercenary media (ADN Cuba, Cubanet, Diario de Cuba, Directorio Cubano, Periódico Cubano, Cubanos por el Mundo, CiberCuba, etc., etc.) that try to appease the anger of so many Cubans affected now, are the same who assure that the blockade does not exist, that it is a hoax of the Cuban government (8).

Meanwhile, the distressing shortage of medicines, food and all kinds of supplies imported with the income collected -remember well- continues in tourism establishments on the Island (9).
